Magic Cloth Photography

Magic Cloth Photography is a an exciting technique to capture a scene with high dynamic range.

Maybe you need to balance the highlights in the sky with the shadows on the ground like a normal northern light show, the Magic Cloth Photography is a good gadget for your camera bag and flexible for your needs.

What you need:

Dark Filter: (Not nightime, only day!)

I prefer screw-on filters for rainy atmospheres.

Heavy Tripod:

I love to get low down for an interesting perspective so quickly adjusting legs are definitely great options to look out for choosing your tripod. Arrange your tripod so it is strong. Vibrations can be caused by the movement of the Magic Cloth. A solid tripod is good practice for top quality long exposure photography.

Avoid heightening the center column unless it is necessary. The center column is the weakest link of the set up.

If your tripod has a hook underneath, suspend things from it to help with better strength. Many professionals carry a special harness that they can fill with stones to give a good weight which will support the tripod nicely – even in strong winds.

Magic cloth procedure:

Start with a filter or darkness for a longer exposure time, then over expose the scene by two to three stops.

Exposure time

It is easier to set a long Exposure time. 2-5 seconds requires a quick, but controlled movement to darken the sky within a split second. 5-10 seconds lets you have a controlled exposure of the foreground.

Magic Cloth Motion

In most conditions I bring the cloth down with a fast action and up slowly.

Different ways

Change the Motion to allow many short exposures of the sky, instead of a single medium exposure (30 sec + exposures only).

Use your spot meter for the sky and then times four to get the total exposure time.
