Ice from the land of ice and fire

I know this is going to screw up my front page, but I just loved the simplicity of this ice – naturally asking for a vertical shot.

Magic Cloth Photography is a a unique method to capture a scene with high dynamic range.

Maybe you like to balance the highlights in the sky with the shadows on the ground like a average northern light show, the Magic Cloth Photography is a good gadget to carry and flexible for your needs.

Long Exposure Photography Tips

Remote release:

Shutter speeds can sometimes be longer than the 30 seconds the camera will let you do. Having a Remote release (sometimes called “infra red Shutter release) will allow you to open the shutter: as long as your battery allows.

Black cloth:

Pick a big cloth like a large sock, or black card of similar size. It must be large enough to completely cover the lens. Better to be Black. A dark colour is better. You can normally make a straight edge out of any cloth.

The Magic Cloth Technique:

Begin with a dark filter or darkness for a for a slower shutter speed, then over expose the picture by two to three stops.

Exposure time

There are benefits to using a long Exposure time. 2-5 seconds requires a quick, but controlled movement to cover the sky within a split second. 5-10 seconds gives you a controlled exposure of the middleground.

Magic Cloth Movement

Normally, I use very fast downward motion and slow, careful upward motions.

Alternative Methods

Vary the Movement to allow a dozen short exposures of the sky, rather than one initial exposure (30 seconds and over exposures only).

Use your spot meter for the sky and multiply that shutter speed by 4
