Blue ice on a yellow morning at Jökulsarlon... The best place in the world to photograph glacier ice. The black sand reflects the deeper colours when it is wet from an Atlantic wave. The textures in the sand are fresh and inviting.

Long exposure photography

Be sure to choose the right equipment for Long Exposure photography. A lens with a large= element is essential, I get poor results with lenses lower than 62mm filter thread. The larger the lens element, the truer the cloth shadow. Lenses can be so wide, such as the Nikkor 14-24mm. The lens is perfect for long exposures at night, but dark filters for day time Neutral Density photography becomes complicated.

Shutter speed

It is preferable to work with a long Shutter speed. 2-5 seconds requires a quick, but controlled movement to cover the sky within a reflex time. 5-10 seconds lets you have a controlled exposure of the foreground.

Magic Cloth Motion

I usually bring the cloth down as fast as possible and bring it up carefully.

Variations

Vary the Motion to capture a dozen short exposures of the clouds, instead of a single medium exposure (30 sec & over exposures only).
